R. Lance Cowart, CPA, Principal

Lance was born in Delano and raised in Porterville, CA. As a Principal with experience in both public and private accounting, Lance has cultivated a niche in the construction, agriculture and manufacturing industries as well as expertise in Employee Stock Ownership Plans and Employer Stock Option Plans. Lance obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and upon graduation, joined Deloitte & Touche, LLP. Prior to joining GBP&B in 1997, his experience included working for a local CPA firm in Visalia, CA and as a CFO in private industry. Lance is active in several organizations, including Rotary, Santa Maria Valley Contractors Association, Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless and Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of Leadership SLO - Class X and a member of AICPA and the CalCPA.

Away From the Office:
Lance and his wife, Julie, live in Grover Beach with their two young children.
An avid runner, Lance also enjoys skateboarding, golf, singing and playing guitar.
The Grapes of Wrath and any of the John Grisham novels are among his favorites as are the movie Forest Gump and classic rock.

Professional Influences, Ideas and Advice:
Lance values GBP&B’s commitment to its people and feels the mutual respect given each employee, no matter what their title, has given the firm that all too rare “family” environment.
Looking forward, Lance believes accounting services will develop into other financial areas where we can serve clients as well as consulting, technology, and software.
His advice to new accountants or students considering a career in accounting:
 • Become well rounded in financial accounting and get experience with financial statements.
 • Take on all the work you can get and do a variety of work.
 • Ask questions and learn from your peers because with the right attitude comes success.
